Symposium

Youth and Distress – Navigating Youth Mental Health: Innovative Approaches for Hong Kong

Youth mental health is deteriorating worldwide. Despite numerous preventative and intervention programmes being established in improving youth mental health outcomes, evidence that confirms its efficacy is still lacking. This symposium will first present findings from a recent epidemiological youth mental health survey conducted in Hong Kong to provide us with a greater understanding towards the prevalence of mental disorders and risk factors for poor mental health in the territory. It will then be followed by two presentations which details two rigorous local efforts in alleviating these mental health problems and promoting awareness in the community, namely a one-stop, youth-focused, multi-disciplinary early intervention programme (LevelMind@JC) and an innovative multi-level online help-seeking platform (headwind). The symposium will be concluded by a youth sharing session on their personal experiences of mental distress, providing insights about what mental health professionals can do to better empower youth to journey through life’s struggles.
